Describe treatment approach used: The majority of my patients come to me with very little verbal language. I initially focus on syllable pattern production, rather than specific phonemes. Functionality is key. Broadly, I will begin with simple syllable patterns containing bilabial and alveolar phonemes, focusing on a child's ability to express their basic wants/needs, and things that are important to them in their direct environment. High intensity and repetition are utilized based on motor learning principles. If speech sounds are substituted, but the child is able to convey their point to familiar partners, shaping techniques are used following mastery to encourage clear production. I utilize functional play activities and always incorporate motokinesthetic/tactile cueing to encourage accurate productions. I've found that allowing a child to get their whole body and mind involved in the process has improved outcomes over time.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents/families are invited to sit in on the therapy sessions if they choose to. I make sure to explain my approach and my treatment techniques to the family as I go, to avoid any confusion or difficulty with carryover at home. I will point out diagnostic indicators of CAS, as well as point out the positive prognostic indicators that their child is displaying. I always invite parents to ask as many questions as possible.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? My current involvement in the apraxia community involves training more therapists in the appropriate ways to treat apraxia, and participating in the Detroit-region “Walk for Apraxia” each year. I have worked closely with other providers and the children/families that I treat, resulting in “new” families seeking me out for therapy based on the experiences of others
