Describe treatment approach used: I believe the best way to approach treatment with children with CAS is to incorporate evidence based methodologies that are based on principles of motor learning. This includes frequent therapy sessions with the highest number of repetitions possible based on the child's age and ability. I start with consistent mass practice of new sound combinations with specific and immediate feedback and maximal cueing. As soon as the child becomes accurate with maximal cuing, I begin to fade back the cues and then change up the prosody while speeding up the rate of the production to match a natural rate of speech. Once the child becomes more accurate, I switch gears by presenting these "mastered sound combinations" during mass practice to a more variable and distributed practice in which feedback/instruction is reduced. I will add new sound combinations and then randomly present the older "mastered" sound combinations in order to generalize this skill moving from Motor Performance to Motor Learning. I use the principles of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing in my therapy as well as the tactile cues based on the PROMPT system. Once the child has consistent success in the therapy session, I work with the parents to generalize these new words into the home setting. It is essential that the parents observe therapy sessions in order to understand how best to cue their child.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: I involve parents by having them observed my sessions with their child. I explain the rationale of my therapy approach and teach them the proper types of prompts they can use in the home to facilitate speech success. I expect home practice for five minutes minimum three days/week. I give the parents sound combinations the child has been successful with in therapy to help them generalize it to the home setting. I like to use practical daily routines and play activities that the families can easily implement in the home for practice.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? My involvement has mostly been through my clients and their families. I've taken part in study groups for PROMPT in the past. I have taken webinars with CASANA to continue my education in the field of apraxia.
