Describe treatment approach used: I believe in finding where a child is successful and building from there. I find that children with childhood apraxia of speech are often resistant to attempting words and movement gestures. I believe it is important to find where the child can be successful including the type of multisensory cuing that words for that child and provide lots of praise to reduce resistance to attempting words. I work closely with parents in this process including always having them present in the room during therapy so that the parents can continue to provide consistent cuing and praise of words and word approximations that have been chosen as targets at home.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: I always have parents in the room during therapy sessions and together we determine which words and word approximations to target in the coming week based on stimulability, relevance, and opportunity to practice. I also model and work with them on cuing movement gestures in words, providing praise, and offering frequent, short, accurate practice sessions with their child in play and daily routines.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? I consistently refer families to the Apraxia Kids website and utilize the handouts from the website. I have done several talks for parents and doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital and in the community to educate them on childhood apraxia of speech, common traits, and components of successful therapy for children with CAS.
