Building from what they currently have to what they have emerging. Picking goals that will build their skills yet also be functional and meaningful. My therapy is play based but includes significant repetition of targeted motor movements. Parents are included in all assessment and therapy activities and given activities to encourage carry-over within other environments. Therapy will include: (as appropriate) modeling; mutual imitation; simultaneous production; immediate imitation; delayed imitation; visual cues; tactile cues; auditory cues; use of pacing cues (visual, auditory and tactile); use of repetitive phrase books, games and finger plays and use of songs/melody.
I have actively searched out continuing education in Apraxia and try to stay up-to-date with research/strategies.
Parents are required to attend all sessions. Parents are asked about current concerns at the beginning of session. These concerns are discussed and if possible added to the therapy goals for the day. Parents actively participate in therapy activities and practice skills to carry-over in the home. Parents are given a written home plan with play based and activities of daily living activities and strategies to target the child's goals.
Many of my clients are very young and I typically use predominantly low tech AAC. I use gestures, signs, picture exchanges commonly to support verbal speech production. I have used iPad apps to support use of carrier phrases and more complex language for older children.
