Parents attend all sessions and demonstrate understanding of carryover practice before leaving the session. I try for 2-3 sessions per week, but insurance often dictates. For a 3 year old child, I transition between many quick activities to keep attention and maximize reps (visual schedule with "all done" bowl increases compliance for nonpreferred activities). We usually begin session with a familiar book/activity to relax them. We blow bubbles and/or whatever oral imitation goals we might have (often with a mirror). We usually do 3-5 sets of quick repetitions of Kaufman cards at their level (100-200 reps per session) mixed into session. I add in several syntax/language sessions with Kaufman homework book or Mutt Family magnet sets. We usually do a finger/play song in the middle that focuses on target sounds and fluency... I keep careful notes of what sounds/syllable shapes are emerging and assess constantly what should come next. I spend a lot of time training families re: carryover practice, signs/pecs/picture schedules to decrease frustration. I try to find out what words are important for families and help child achieve approximations.
For older children who may not have had appropriate early intervention, I find that families are very worried about literacy. I try to work with schools to encourage modified testing (our DAS kids should not be timed to demonstrate literacy!). I work a lot with phonemic awareness, syntax (verbal and written) and blends.
We are taking 6 families affected by apraxia to the next Apraxia Kids walk in Columbia, SC One of the mom's has been reaching out to other parents to include them in family activities and we are facilitating this. I spend a lot of time training parents re: IEP process/goals because they will need to be the school-based expert on their child. I have found that many school based SLPs don't know about best practice/educational needs of children with CAS. I go to IEP meetings (when needed) to advocate for my students. I'm working with educational specialists/tutors to implement motor based strategies into literacy training.
Parents attend all sessions and demonstrate understanding of carryover activities before leaving sessions. Often I give them a page/goal from Kaufman homework book or make copies of muts/objects for them to practice certain words/sentences. (Bobby eat apple, bobby eat hot dog, Bobby eat hamburger).
I have used PECS, picture schedules and sign language to assist with functional communication for children. For a child with a good prognosis for becoming a verbal communicator and good family support I usually find that these suffice. I have used Pro Loquo 2 Go on ipad to help with a few other children who had more severe issues (apraxia and autism). I help families find functional apps help with individual needs (visual schedules, telling stories, etc.)
