My treatment approach to treating children with apraxia of speech is unique to each child and their specific needs. As an experienced speech language pathologist, I utilize my diagnostic findings and collaborate with parents to determine what words/movement gestures/syllable shapes are most functional and meaningful to the client and/or their family. Ideally, treatment sessions will occur 3x times per week. Treatment sessions should be efficient, effective, and enjoyable!
Childhood Apraxia of Speech has been my biggest area of interest within the field of speech language pathology since I was a graduate student at New York University in 2012. I have attended many workshops held by the leaders of research in childhood apraxia of speech and I will be attending the Apraxia Bootcamp presented by Apraxia Kids in the Summer of 2021.
Parents are a key component to effective treatment of childhood apraxia of speech. Parents assist in formulating target words for their child, participate/observe during treatment sessions, and aid in carryover of skills learned during treatment into the child’s most natural environment- home!
I have used sign language, created static communication boards, and used/programmed speech generating devices with children with CAS.
