The approach to therapy depends on the needs of the child. I ensure that a child attempts to imitate before proceeding to shape sound production. I target words that are high frequency and important to the child and adjust as a child becomes more involved in the session. I integrate some language tasks to facilitate functional use of target words in play-based activities. I also increase the demands as appropriate. I am trained in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing.
I help my families navigate the apraxia world online.
I include my families in selecting the target words for the patients. A child is often more encouraged to say a word that has a lot of meaning and importance to them as opposed to a less frequent word in their life. Families are the best resource for determining these.
I have used sign language and encouraged patients to use their AAC devices to communicate even when targeting speech sound production. I do not train children in using high tech devices as we have other SLPs who do that part; however, I integrate this into the session particularly when targeting language.
