I strongly advocate for meaningful communication and believe that therapy should always be fun, positive and engaging while using evidence-based treatment methods. My therapeutic approach is tailored to the specific needs and interests of my clients. In the initial stages of the therapeutic process, I determine my client's individualized needs through formal and informal assessment, client and parent input as well as clinical observations. Once we collaboratively determine our goals, we often embed a multisensory cueing approach. Specific methodologies implemented include: Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing, PROMPT, chaining and the cycles approach. I often implement a variety of methodologies and adjust the approach as the individual progresses through therapy. We may target syllable shapes of various consonant-vowel configurations, phonemic repertoire, mean length of utterances, rate and prosody, coarticulatory transitions between sounds and syllables and production of multisyllabic words. Positive reinforcement and use of preferred interests are important in increasing motivation to communicate. If the individual would benefit from an alternative means of communication, I may also integrate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) while continuing to target verbal speech production. I currently hold a LAMP certification through The Center of AAC and Autism and am a PROMPT-trained clinician. I was admitted to the 2020 Apraxia Kids Intensive Training Boot Camp.
I believe that communication is a human right and every person should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. I currently have the honor of serving as the President of a nonprofit organization, The Friendship Journey, which creates friendships and equitable opportunities for individuals of all physical and neurological abilities. I have had the privilege of working with many clients with apraxia all across the lifespan and love supporting individuals on their journeys to becoming successful and confident communicators.
Parents are an essential part of the therapy team and it is imperative that they are informed and empowered throughout the therapeutic process. We provide detailed explanations and answer any inquiries parents may have to ensure that they have a strong understanding of apraxia, our treatment approach and the implementation of carryover. Because repetitive practice is especially critical for treatment of apraxia, we provide specific feedback regarding practicing at home, strategies, activities and the rationale behind our approaches. We consistently provide feedback regarding progression and may encourage parent observation when it is the right fit for the client.
