Overall Treatment Approach:
My treatment approach takes into account several factors. The availability of the parents is always a major issue when making recommendations. Private services in conjunction with school services are necessary at times to fulfill the frequency that is needed for these children to make gains. The approach is based on the severity of the CAS. I typically use a multi- modal approach using DTTC, PROMPT and the KSP hierarchy at times and sometimes a select vocabulary. AAC is also always a consideration.
Percent of CAS cases: 10%
Parents play an extremely important and supportive role in the child’s progress when dealing with any delay or disorder. We welcome the participation in the planning process and the observation of speech/language therapy at any time. Daily information about the child’s day is vital to judge their level of comfort in how they will respond to therapy on any given day. The child is dealing with a tough situation and we are here to be supportive and make it as easy as possible while working hard to achieve their goals. We wish for them to be happy, functional communicators with reduced frustration. I educate the parents on treatment techniques to use at home, and provide appropriate home assignments and worksheets to use. Most of all, I try to guide them through a process of helping their child become a “typical” communicator.
I wish to become a more active member of the Apraxia community. I have sought out information from Apraxia Kids for many years and followed ASHA's publications on Apraxia. I have also attended other in-services over the years or watched on-line video presentations.
