Overall Treatment Approach:
The treatment approach that we have at our clinic is multi-faceted. We offer clients the opportunity to participate in 6-week blocks of intensive intervention to aid in their independent articulatory movements and their speech-sound development. We begin by selecting real-word targets and we practice them in a blocked format. We initially offer a high level of cueing and PROMPTs per target to lay the foundation for successful generalization. Once the client demonstrates in increased independence in their productions, we begin to randomize trials.
Percent of CAS cases: 95
Parents are the people that drive our therapy process. We invite them into every session. We discuss home practice as early and often as possible to aid in generalization. We describe our process of supporting their child's speech/language output and add meaning to it, no matter how intelligible it may be. We also provide daily feedback for parents about strengths and challenges for their child.
Our practice has served clients who have Apraxia and related disorders and their families for approximately 25 years. Dr. Maureen Sweeney, a partner and clinical director at Sweeney Augustin and Associates, currently serves as Co-President of the North Suburban Speech and Language Association and teaches the Pediatric Speech Sound Disorder graduate class at Northwestern University. She is a past-president and member of the board of Have Dreams, a nonprofit organization that provides after school and weekend programs for children with autism. As a clinical team, we have presented about our work and our clients at many conferences including the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association and the Illinois Speech Language and Hearing Association.
