Overall Treatment Approach:
When possible (given family schedules, insurance coverage, etc) I try to schedule kids with CAS two-three times a week (depending on severity). I pick a target movement pattern, and a few select target words (making sure to vary the vowels within the targets), and then do massed or block practice throughout the session, to achieve the high level of trials per word needed for improvement. I vary the level of cueing (simultaneous up through responding to questions) based on their production at each moment. I give frequent and specific feedback based to improve accuracy of movement. I work in different natural rate and varied prosody early on in the practice of each word.
Percent of CAS cases: 10
For younger children, parents are usually in the therapy room during the sessions if they want. However, as children get older this often becomes a distraction for children and they do better when their parents wait in the waiting room. After each session, parents are informed of the words that were practiced, the general level of support needed, the type of physical/verbal cueing used to improve accuracy of movement, and a short video of the session so they can see it in action. They are encouraged to try the words at home using the same techniques and are asked to give feedback regarding homework at the beginning of the next session.
I have had very little involvement directly. I have read research articles or text book chapter, and worked with my clients. I recently attended a 2-day conference on Apraxia.
