Overall Treatment Approach:
I used multi-sensory play based approach to treatment. I suggest either having multiple sessions a week or if multiple sessions aren't possible, I set up a home program and school program so the child can practice every day. I use components of different therapy strategies ( Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing, PROMPT, Tactile Cues, mass practice, sound and syllable shape inventories, etc. ) depending on the child and how they are presenting in therapy. I will informally reevaluate new sound and syllable shapes that the child may show emerging skills in and work to build complexity in their sound sequencing. Also, I will work on prosody as the child builds complexity into their speech.
Percent of CAS cases: 9
Parent involvement is very important. I typically have parents complete fun activities or play games with words shapes that the child is almost or mastered so they can continue to build generalization of the work during the therapy session. I encourage parents to be an active participant in the sessions or at least watch to they know exactly what is going on in the sessions.
In a very parent-friendly way, I typically say that it is a disconnect between the brain and the muscles of the mouth and that we need to help the muscles learn the speech patterns and become automatic. I talk about how specific features of CAS and how their child appears to be presenting and what are the next steps to build skills for communication.
