Parent Involvement:
Parents participate in every treatment session, either through observing, acting as communication partners or providing positive feedback and reassurance. It's important to work as a team and include parents throughout the process as part of the team. For example, I recently had a parent tell me after 3 treatment sessions that their child who had only nasal vowels said "go" in the car only and did raspberries when he became mad. WOW! I was able to take those oral sounds and shape them into functional vocabulary and now we have "boy, bye, girl, beau (his dog's name), girl, geh (get)" etc... As noted above, only achievable homework is provided for home.

Community Involvement:
I am currently assisting a parent who is creating information and toolkits for parents whose child has received a recent diagnosis of apraxia. I am an advocate for increasing frequency and quality of school based services for all children with apraxia, but recently have had several children who hold dual diagnoses of Down syndrome and apraxia of speech.
