Overall Treatment Approach:
I work with parents to ease the stress or pressure either/both may be feeling. I have written an e-book and a workbook to inform parents about speech and language, and I share with parents how to get their communication efforts into a better balance, so they become communication partners. My top first tip is to guide the parent to see how s/he is asking questions about 80% of the time (this is the usual percentage) and then teach the parent to speak in statement comment form at least 80% of the time. I also teach the use of what I call the Upside-Down Pyramid, as a way to start with a full, natural sentence and reduce to whatever level (single word, sound, sound effect) is needed for the child to take a successful verbal/vocal turn. I have strong opinions about the use of grammatical models, while reducing models in length. I explain CAS in simple terms and describe my methods and objectives. I have listed my first 3 below. I do use phonological principles in sound selection and use a one-sound-a-week approach, unless the child/family shows me that they need more than one week to practice a sound before we move on.
Percent of CAS cases: 72
Parents observe every session. The parent is present in the room, unless there is a reason the parent feels she should watch the session through the observation window. Parents see exactly what verbal coaching tips and other techniques help the child be successful. Parents are given specific practice materials and written and verbal recommendations for practice. Parents weigh-in on best words to target each week (in terms of functional or preferred vocabulary). I praise parents as well as children for their practice efforts each week and for returning the practice sets, so I may do a quick re-check at the beginning of each session.
I participate on one of the fb sites, but so far I have gone there to see what parents feel and express; I haven't jumped in with any supportive or informative comments much (maybe just once or twice). I need to participate in the annual walk!
