Overall Treatment Approach:
I use a motor learning approach the is individual and intensive. Using my knowledge of proprioception with tactile cuing that I learned through PROMPT I use touch to provide external feedback for the motor movements. In addition, I do a combination of blocked practice (at early stages) and mostly random practice with specific verbal and visual feedback as to what they did correctly or incorrectly related to the motor placement, voicing, and air flow, to help the child learn the motor movements. Parents attend all sessions and are given constant feedback. For home practice they are provided with videos of therapy for video modeling and understanding of how to elicit targets. I typically schedule therapy 2-3 times a week of individual therapy depending on the severity of the CAS and other factors. I also use total communication from the beginning (sign language, flip n talk, and/or proloquo2go depending on the severity) with a core vocabulary picture book.
Percent of CAS cases: 5
I have all the parents attend every session, if at all possible. For children that I have to see at preschools, I require the parent to attend 1 session a month (25% of the overall sessions) To do this, sometimes, I have sessions on the weekends at the child's house, so I can involve the whole family. They are then suppose to follow through with recommendations at home daily. I also send videos to the families as much as possible showing techniques. The children love watching themselves and it serves as video modeling.
I am active in my local Facebook support group for the low country.
