Overall Treatment Approach:
I am very eclectic in my approach to CAS in that I do combine the best of all of the training that I have been afforded. I tend to rely heaviest on a combination of DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing) and PROMPT (Level 2 Trained) at least initially with most children for the multi-sensory cuing, but do combine with other materials/methods (core vocabulary books and accept successive approximations) as well. I find that it is very important that the treatment must be intensive but FUN for the children so that they do not burn out quickly. Treatment sessions are usually two to three times weekly for 50 minutes in length for my clients, so we break each task down into about 7-10 minutes. We typically will have more than one speech target at a time plus a core vocabulary. I use random and blocked practice of the targeted items and provide various types of cuing depending on what the child needs. The child receives a lot of positive reinforcement and appropriate feedback to learn to judge for themselves if a production is correct of not. I have a vast amount of experience working with young children with CAS. I find that in just a few short sessions, parents will notice that their child’s self -esteem and confidence will start to boost as they become a better communicator!
Percent of CAS cases: 60
Parents are directly involved in both sessions, observations, and homework activities. They are expected to complete weekly activities at home with their child.
I have sponsored (donated money) to Apraxia walks, volunteered with my daughter's Girl Scout Troop at our local Westminter Maryland walk.
