Overall Treatment Approach:
I establish a functional vocabulary, often using the KSPT flash cards. I establish a few high frequency carrier phrases (e.g. I want x). I gradually increase complexity and length, and then gradually reduce the level of structure of sessions in order to promote generalization. I prefer to see clients 2-3 times a week if insurance and funding allows.

Percent of CAS cases: 35

Parent Involvement:
Parents are typically present at every session and provided with homework. I provide them with parent handouts explaining the nature of CAS, and also encourage them to join support groups in the community or on social media platforms. I ask parents to provide a list of their child’s favorite thing (e.g. foods, toys, games, activities, shows, people, etc) in order to establish a functional base vocabulary for the child. Parents are encouraged to join in during games, and I often coach them on how this can be transferred to home activities.

Community Involvement:
I have gone to two Walks for Childhood Apraxia of Speech events in Seattle. I am part of the Apraxia Kids: Official Support Group on Facebook. I have advocated for kids with CAS in the school system if services have been denied.
