Overall Treatment Approach:
My treatment approach is very flexible and depends on the child's level and age. I like to have a mix of speech sounds targets, syllable shapes, along with the appropriate level of oral-motor difficulty and amount of targets. I like to ask parents for functional words as well, like names of siblings, pets, and cousins, favorite toys and TV shows, and functional words in our environment. I try to corporate these words into carrier phrases with the child. I want the parents to be as involved as possible, as a partner, and to facilitate carryover. I structure my sessions with warmups (review of previous words that we can do quickly) and structured practice, often with the Kaufman Treatment Kit and and workout book. Sometimes I use hand signals. I give lots of feedback and cues and fade as the child gains more confidence. I use many carrier phrases and short sentences that the student can do spontaneously, for example "I do, Me too, Two eyes" to help build 2+ word utterances. I use many visual supports and a visual schedule to reduce frustration. I enjoy using repetitive books, visual companions to books, puppets that will practice speech sounds and syllables with us, repetitive tasks like building blocks, magnets, and others to encourage a high amount of practice repetitions. My ultimate goal is for the kids to feel ownership of their words. I want them to feel confident when about speaking to others and proud of the progress that they make in therapy.

Percent of CAS cases: 5

Parent Involvement:
I like to have parents as involved as possible and encourage them to observe the first few sessions. When parents are comfortable waiting outside the therapy room, I like to take 5 minutes after the session to share the activities we did and reflect on weekly homework.

Community Involvement:
One of my professional goals was to hear Nancy Kaufman speak on CAS, which I did in October 2015. I subscribe to email newsletters from Northern Speech Services and CASANA. I follow a variety of blogs and people through social media.
