Overall Treatment Approach:
I use a multi-modal approach, depending on the needs of the child and the challenges they family is experiencing. Some children have felt so unsuccessful with verbal communication that they will shut down if I attempt to get any verbal or sound imitation right away. Most of the time, I try initially to build off of success the child is having with communication, and try to add to that. I also try to encourage families to allow their children to move and have gross motor movements be a part of our drill and practice time, as often that can help to "get the sounds out." We also use reflex integration and sensory integration strategies in our office to make the tasks of communicating, listening and learning easier for the children in our care, including incorporating new motor speech patterns into their daily routines.
Percent of CAS cases: 10
Parents are educated about CAS, provided with opportunities to observe strategies during parts of therapy time (younger children may have parents present for the entire session, depending on the needs of the child), and are provided with practice materials to use for home practice.
I often refer clients to the Apraxia Kids website, but have not been actively involved outside of working directly with clients and their families.
