Overall Treatment Approach:
I will determine the frequency and intensity of speech therapy based upon the severity of their motor speech disorder, their ability to tolerate treatment and their willingness to participate in therapy. I will select goals based upon their current phonetic repertoire, phonetic contexts in which they produce sounds (v, vc, cv, cvcv, cvc, etc.), and their level of coordinated motor movements (respiration, phonation, mandibular, labial, lingua, etc). I use an approach that includes tactile, visual, and verbal prompts. Within each therapy session my goal is to elicit/prompt frequent production of target phonemes in specific phonetic contexts (cv, vc, cvc, etc.). My target sounds/words are selected based upon sounds/words that will provide the most functional and meaningful outcomes for the client and his/her family. Often times, I include picture communication and/or sign language within my treatment sessions to provide my clients with functional communication strategies that reinforce their communication attempts and help them to feel successful in communicating to get their needs met within the activities of daily living.

Percent of CAS cases: 30

Parent Involvement:
When available and appropriate, I prefer parents/caregivers observe each therapy session so they are aware of target phonemes/words/phrases, know how target sounds/words are elicited, and so that they can provide information that will allow us to develop functional goals and/or target words that will have the most impact on their child's ability to communicate within the activities of daily living. I will determine the parents level of participation during the treatment and at home based upon their relationship with their child and their child's responsiveness to their parents input/feedback.

Community Involvement:
I have been working as a certified speech and language therapist for the last 15 years. I work in both school and private practice settings. Within the private practice setting, I focus mostly on early intervention and receive frequent referrals for children with Apraxia of speech. I have participated in the PROMPT initial training and picture communication.
