Overall Treatment Approach:
My treatment approach centers around increasing speech production, intelligibility, and integrating alternate modes of communication to facilitate the motor learning. I incorporate PROMPT, visual oral placement cues, and verbal cues in the beginning phases of treatment. All cues and prompts are slowly faded until the child is producing the sound, syllable, word, etc independently. Consistent verbal praise and toys are used in each session to elevate/maintain motivation and provide positive re-enforcement. I incorporate prosody activities in the treatment to assist with naturalness of speech. All treatment plans are tailored to the child’s needs, are evidenced based and discussed with the parent prior to the beginning of therapy.
Percent of CAS cases: 60
Parent/Caregiver involvement is imperative in the treatment process. All sessions are observed by the parent/caregiver via an iPad. The parent/caregiver receives a short progress report at the end of each session with a description of each activity during the session and a description of the home focus for that week. An at home practice program is discussed, developed and implemented. All parents are able to demonstrate understanding of the target skills and activities to be employed at home. This aids in generalization and carryover across settings/environments.
The majority of my career has been spent working in private practice and school environments with children birth-21. I have many years of experience working with children with apraxia. I provided therapy and advocated in the schools for children with CAS to better/increase their abilities to communicate effectively in the educational environment. In the both settings, I have provided funding resources for therapy for individuals who may not have insurance/medical benefits. I continue to further my knowledge and learn evidence based treatment techniques by attending conferences, workshops, and trainings.
