Overall Treatment Approach:
Depending on the individual needs of the child, I may incorporate multi-sensory cues, successive approximations, AAC supports, PROMPT, and DTTC techniques. Consideration is given to vowels and intonation as they acquire communication skills. In addition to speech/articulation, a child may need therapy to acquire specific language skills.
Percent of CAS cases: TBD
I involve the parents in creating a list of high frequency words that are motivating to the child and will give them opportunities to practice with various people and in a variety of settings. Parents report what went well vs. what areas they struggled with since the most recent therapy session. They have the opportunity to be present for the therapy sessions, observe techniques, ask questions, and demonstrate understanding of techniques and strategies. Additionally, parents are instrumental in creating and maintaining the target word/phrase list for their child to practice between sessions.
I attended my first Walk for Apraxia when my son was diagnosed with CAS in 2014. I have participated in the Walk for Apraxia every year since then. Currently, I am on the planning committee for the 2019 Orlando Walk for Apraxia. I co-created the “Apraxia Kids – Central FL” group on Facebook and continue to provide information to parents and families.
