Overall Treatment Approach:
My sessions are set up based on PROMPT protocol. The session starts with a discussion with the parent to review previous home (distributed) practice. Next is a mass practice warm up to determine progress since last session and targets for the current sessions. Distributed practice takes place in motivating, meaningful play-based activities with tactile-kinethestic (PROMPT) Supports for the Words we are targeting. At the end of the session, parents are given practice words with suggestions of how to use these words in daily activities (e.g. working on “up” when you get up into the van, get up into the high chair, get up to wash your hands).
Percent of CAS cases: 60
Parents are involved in all aspects of my treatment. They learn about the Motor Speech Hierarchy and how to look for and understand motor challenges within their child’s speech. Parents receive weekly home practice lexicon targets and report each week on how these words are generalizing. They stay and play in session to observe targets, PROMPT Supports and ask questions. Parents can chose to be taught Parameter PROMPTs to help their child at home as well.
I sit on a number of local Facebook sites to answer questions. Our team participates in local Apraxia walks. I am involved with our Motor Speech Steering Committee in Edmonton, as well as involved in advocating at the government level for home-based direct treatment supports for children with CAS.
