Overall Treatment Approach:
Looking at the whole child in assessment, I take into account their functional needs, their tolerance, their personality, etc., and combine that with a look at their sound inventory, syllable and word structure, oral motor movement skills and language skills. In therapy, I integrate different therapy techniques: hand signs or other AAC to help build a young child’s communication success and confidence, hand cueing by me for sound placement, TalkTools OPT (Oral Placement Therapy) if needed for oral sensory and tactile feedback, lots of visual cues, lots of movement practice for motor learning and hopefully, enough fun to keep the child engaged and motivated.
Percent of CAS cases: 30
Education is key. I explain the rationale for the what we are doing in therapy and the outcomes we are looking for. I encourage parents to be in the session when possible. When not possible, due to siblings or distraction, I will bring the parent in when a child is having consistent success with a speech task and home practice can begin. I also provide suggestions for working on language skills, and when needed, oral motor skills. I greatly enjoy working with parents as a team and welcome questions and feedback.
I’ve often lived in rural communities where my caseload only had 1 or 2 children with CAS. So in the past, I haven’t had much involvement with the Apraxia Kids community. However, now that I am in Spring Hill, FL working with some wonderful children with CAS and their families, I look forward to joining in the 2018 Walk for Apraxia and learning more about how I can advocate for children with Apraxia.
