Overall Treatment Approach:
Based on the motor speech hierarchy, I determine which stage the child is functioning at and choose goals that would make the most positive impact on the client. For example, if the child has decreased mandibular control, I may choose vowels that help establish jaw control.
Percent of CAS cases: 30
The parents are provided information about CAS, including websites such as apraxia-kids.org to refer to. Once a child is successful in a particular sound sequence or sound, I provide parents with take home words to practice within the context of a repetitive game (to keep it interesting). I may also develop a fun frustration phrase such as "Oh banana!" for the whole family to use so that the child can get some extra practice in.
In the past, the extent of my knowledge with CAS was through "The Source: Childhood Apraxia of Speech" and using the Kaufman Cards. Over the years, I have had more and more children on my caseload with CAS and, wanting to be the best clinician possible, I have done more research, read articles, and watched Webinars on the Apraxia Kids website. I most recently completed the PROMPT course, which gave great insight into the motor speech hierarchy and treatment.
