Overall Treatment Approach:
I am currently utilizing Dr. Jakielski's Building Speech system, where we begin with pattern 1, CVs, then moving to pattern 2 of reduplicated syllables, then pattern 3, which is consonants in an open word shape: CVCV (i.e., "cookie"). Per Nancy Kaufman's approach, close approximations of the targeted words are accepted, then shaped into a closer match to the target word. Principle's of motor learning guide my treatment, and I have taught classes to graduate students on childhood apraxia of speech. I instill in my students the knowledge of motor learning principles to guide their thinking about apraxia.
Percent of CAS cases: 20
Parents observe treatment sessions weekly in my private practice. In addition, the parents have written assignments to carry out at home, which I demonstrate after the child's speech therapy session.
I have followed the apraxia-kids website for updates to the field of CAS. As a clinician, I have instructed graduate students in how to diagnose and treat CAS.
