Overall Treatment Approach:
I use an eclectic treatment approach with children with CAS. I typically see children who are very young and just starting out in therapy. Therefore, I embed a motor learning approach t( which includes a lot of practice of the same speech pattern or speech movements to help with automaticity of these sound sequences) with a play based language development or linguistic approach. I typically include sensory motor input and include cues and prompting to help build awareness of the sounds and motor movements needed to produce the target words. I also use kinesthetic learning and help children pair motor movements with sounds and eventually shape those movements into meaningful productions.
Percent of CAS cases: 50
I use a coaching model with parents. I like to have parents participate in therapy sessions. We work on building vocabulary lists or core words that are relevant to home life. We then work on building sound combinations and select words or sounds, sound combinations, etc. for home practice. I model and demonstrate any cueing techniques that are used so that the families are able to use the same prompts and cues that are used during therapy sessions.
I have participated in several of the local Apraxia walks over the years. I provide local and national resources to the families I work with and connect them with other families who are also navigating CAS.
