Overall Treatment Approach:
My overall treatment approach in working with children exhibiting CAS is to become part of a team with the child and his/her parents. I want the child to work with me to develop functional communication, be successful in communication interactions, and feel pride and success from therapy sessions. Following evaluation and explanation of the type of speech sound disorder, severity, and prognosis, I will devise therapy goals. Quality practice includes a high number of correctly shaped responses for the child to support intelligibility in any given therapy session.

Percent of CAS cases: 3

Parent Involvement:
I want to include parents as much as they can be involved, both to provide needed important and functional vocabulary targets that work into speech therapy sessions, and to practice targets selected by me to build speech movement skills. I ask parents to be involved to supply functional and needed vocabulary to support communication in the child's various settings. I would like parents to sit in therapy sessions. I explain that home practice is important and that watching therapy session will aid in their understanding of what to expect from child in home practice and how to assist child. If parent tells me there is too much going on at home to practice, I will try to work out another way for additional practice. Teachers may be able to provide some separate classroom time; sometimes I am able to have both parent and teacher practice with child.

Community Involvement:
I have worked both in private practice settings and in the public schools with children exhibiting CAS.
