Overall Treatment Approach:
Fun, engaging activities that are of high interest to the individual are carefully selected. The careful selection of highly motivating activities allow for increased response trials per session. A small number of target words are identified for the child to practice many times during each session. The child is seated across from the clinician so that he/she may look at the clinicians face and so that the clinician may utilize techniques such as PROMPT as appropriate. Short, frequent sessions are recommended.
Percent of CAS cases: 70
Parents are encouraged to observe and participate in therapy. By observing, they will learn the target words that are practiced so that they can create opportunities for using these words at home. Parents will also appreciate how hard their child is working and will see how quickly their child can master words when the appropriate, individualized treatment is selected for their child. Parents are welcome to participate in the session. I always value their input and appreciate their questions. Having a parent involved in treatment allows me to explain the rational for the approach that I am using.
During my tenure as an SLP, much of my time has been focused on working with families in early intervention and preschool. I have had the opportunity to work with many families who are just beginning to learn about Apraxia. Often times I am the first person to mention Apraxia to them. In this way, I am helping the family to open the door to the Apraxia community by connecting them with other local families, guiding them to other professionals who specialize in CAS and providing them with various resources which may include books, websites and articles.
