This hands-on, practical, therapy-rich presentation will focus on strategies for therapists that facilitate verbal communication for children with apraxia of speech. An overview of evaluation considerations and how they relate to therapy decision-making will be presented. The majority of the presentation will be intervention-based, with a wide range of therapy ideas described. A multi-sensory approach to therapy will be detailed. Extensive videos of children in therapy will be used to highlight strategies and suggestions for carryover outside of the therapy setting.
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- List key differential diagnostic features for childhood apraxia of speech.
- List effective multi-sensory therapy strategies for children with CAS.
- Describe critical factors in early target selection.
- Outline therapy activities for repetitive practice.
- Describe how to enhance parent involvement and home carryover.
Intermediate/Professional Area. Participants are expected to have some prior academic and/or clinical experience with children with severe speech disorders. Families are most welcome at the workshop with the understanding that the level of presentation will be at the intermediate professional level.

Group Rates: Professional Group Rate of 5 or more registrations $155 each. Please copy registration form as many times as needed and mail group registrations in the same envelope.

Registration Fee Includes:

Cancellation: Paid registration fees will be refunded, less a $25 (USD) administration fee, with a written request postmarked no later than February 5, 2016. There will be no refunds after February 5, 2016. CASANA reserves the right to cancel this workshop with due cause and refund in full. In the event that this workshop is cancelled by CASANA, full refunds of paid registrations will be made on or before February 5, 2016. ASHA CE eligibility for professionals is dependent upon participant attendance. Therefore participants who do not attend the workshop in it’s entirety, sign attendance sheets and submit required paperwork will not be considered for ASHA Continuing Education Units. This workshop is not being offered for variable credit.

Dave Hammer is the Director of Professional Development and Speech Services for the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA). Prior to this position, Dave had 35 years of pediatric clinical experience at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA with specialty interests in childhood apraxia of speech and speech sound disorders. He has been invited to present over 150 workshops on childhood apraxia and speech sound disorders throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. Dave was a member of the ASHA AdHoc committee on childhood apraxia of speech. He has been involved in the production of a number of apraxia-related DVD’s and an innovative children’s CD. Dave is known for his practical and therapy-rich presentations.
Mr. Hammer receives compensation for his role with CASANA. Mr. Hammer receives ongoing compensation for his participation in the production of the CASANA DVD “Treatment Strategies for Childhood Apraxia of Speech.” Mr. Hammer also acts as the ASHA CE Consultant for CASANA.
