I conduct a comprehensive evaluation initially and using those results, along with feedback from family regarding meaningful and important words for their child/family, word targets are chosen. Therapy involves significant practice with the chosen set of words in a structured approach, functional practice in daily activities to practice use of target words in meaningful ways as well as working on alternate communication strategies such as use of simple signs or picture based communication programs to build language, vocabulary and social communication skills. Treatment techniques that are evidenced based are the focus. I have experience with DTTC approach, and am PROMPT trained. Parents/family participate in therapy sessions.
I had the opportunity to receive extensive mentoring and experience working with children with CAS while working for a practice specializing in CAS. During that time, I had the privilege of working with many children with CAS and their families, supervising graduate student clinicians, providing inservices to fellow colleagues regarding DTTC & motor learning Theory, & iPad use for alternate communication & therapy to parents/families. I have enjoyed participating in Apraxia Awareness walks within my community. Whether working in my community providing early intervention services, private therapy services or providing teletherapy services across the country, I advocate for children with CAS in my daily work, providing education & resources to parents & families, colleagues & teachers about CAS diagnosis & treatment for children who demonstrate signs/symptoms of CAS.
Parent/family involvement is critical to success. Parents are involved from the initial contact, providing valuable assessment information & identification of meaningful words for your child and family, information on your child's interests & family communication goals. Parents/families participate in therapy with a focus on how to support practice at home within daily routines & activities. Parents/families are partners in the therapy process.
AAC is critical in the treatment process to support ongoing language development and successful communication opportunities while the child works on their verbal speech skills. This can be as simple as the use of gestures, & early signs with young children to provide opportunities for your child to name family members & friends, request a favorite toy, or to protest. Use of picture boards, programs on tablets and iPads, and dedicated AAC devices depending on the needs & preferences of your child & family May be explored. Through this vocabulary & sentences can grow allowing your child to express themselves, and develop improved social communication with family & peers. I am trained in PECS, and have experience with picture based programs on tablets & iPads.
