Standing By & Standing Up for Kids with Apraxia

Dear Friends,

As 2013 draws to a close, CASANA – its staff and board of directors – are thankful for our friends and supporters. We have been able to accomplish amazing things, some of which included:

  • Small therapy grants to children with apraxia
  • The first international Childhood Apraxia of Speech Awareness Day on May 14th
  • iPads and protective cases to children with apraxia for their home speech practice and communication needs
  • The highest number of parent scholarships ever for the National Conference on Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  • An international research symposium, hosting 40 researchers from five countries to share the “State of the Art” in apraxia research; with videos of the main presentations available on our website for public viewing.

These are just several of the accomplishments improving lives of children and families impacted by apraxia.

If you are considering year end giving, we would love to have your support so that 2014 can be another amazing year of advances for children with apraxia and their families.

Every child deserves a voice.

Nothing can be more intimidating and confusing as a bunch of numbers, symbols, and jargon attempting to explain a child’s capabilities on a diagnostic report. This session is designed to help participants understand how to discern much of the technical terms and measures typically used in speech language pathology and audiology. The session will also address the types of information that should to be included in the report to make it more helpful to future professionals the child may work with, as well as family members.

biofeedback

Real-time ultrasound imaging of the tongue has recently been used as a biofeedback tool for treating persisting speech sound disorders, including childhood apraxia of speech.

With ultrasound, clients (and clinicians) can see their tongue position and shape and can be cued to modify tongue movements in real-time with this visual information. Although not every SLP will have access to this technology, clinicians should be informed of the advantages and disadvantages of this approach as well as the research supporting the efficacy of ultrasound biofeedback.

The seminar will provide an overview with video examples of how the technology can be used to assess tongue movements and remediate speech errors in school-age children with CAS.

Every Child DESERVES A Voice. Are you In? #GivingTuesday

Dear Friends and Supporters,

TODAY is #GivingTuesday, a day directly following Black Friday and Cyber Monday which reminds us that our giving spirits during the holiday season can aspire to do so much more than purchase “stuff”.
We invite you to join us in CASANAs vision that every childevery one of themdeserves a voice.
We know that “having a voice” for a child with apraxia means being able to speak and communicate, but it also means so much more.  “Having a voice” for a child who has been impacted with apraxia also means that:
  • She is able to develop confidence and certainty that her voice matters, is listened to and respected.
  • He is able to take communication risks and be supported in the process.
  • Each child with apraxia understands that his or her personal gifts, talents, and abilities are very much needed in the world.

We are so happy to see the impact of CASANAs work on children affected by apraxia and their families.  We remain the only national nonprofit organization dedicated EXCLUSIVELY to children with apraxia. Are you with us?  Are you in? We hope that you will consider joining with our mission and vision this giving season.
