Giving Our Kids A Voice Through Parent Blogs

Many parents took to the blogs in order to raise apraxia awareness and to share what it meant to them and to their child. Their writing is quite moving and inspiring.  We’ve tried to capture those writings on a Pinterest Board so that readers can go to one online place to get connected with them. (Please note: for technical reason’s some blogs would not “pin” so our apologies if any blog is not included!) Apraxia Awareness Day Parent Blog Writing Pinterest Board

CASANA PARTNERS WITH SSIS TO FUND SPEECH THERAPY FOR CHILDREN WITH APRAXIA OF SPEECH

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 6, 2013) – The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) and Small Steps in Speech (SSIS) have initiated a joint project to aid families of children with apraxia of speech by providing small grants for children’s speech therapy.

Children with apraxia of speech typically require frequent and intensive speech therapy, especially initially and when severely affected.  With appropriate and early speech therapy, most children with apraxia can become verbal communicators, speaking with their very own voices.  Without the appropriate therapy, children with apraxia may never develop intelligible speech.  Apraxia can be life altering for the families who struggle to find and afford sufficient help for their children.

SSIS, an organization that provides financial therapy assistance for children with speech and communication disorders, will distribute CASANA grants for therapy on behalf of eligible children with apraxia selected in a thorough application process.

“SSIS already has an excellent reputation as well as a solid application and selection process in place.  While we know we cannot help all who may need it, with funding from CASANA, SSIS will be able to have a special focus on apraxia and aid some of those who are the most in need,” says Sharon Gretz, Executive Director of CASANA. CASANA will provide funding to SSIS for the project. The project is funded through donations to the Walk for Children with Apraxia®[http://www.apraxiawalk.org].

“We at Small Steps in Speech are grateful to CASANA.  Not only are we able to provide supplemental funding for speech therapy for children with apraxia, but this collaboration strengthens the reach of both organizations.  Small Steps in Speech was founded in honor of fallen hero, U.S. Army Medic and Green Beret SSG Marc J Small.  SSG Small supported the growth and improvement of all children and it is fitting that these funds will allow children the opportunity to be the best that the can be,” says Amanda Charney, Executive Director of SSIS.  SSIS will receive applications, operate the selection process, and distribute the therapy funds.

CASANA CELEBRATES THE FIRST EVER APRAXIA AWARENESS DAY ON MAY 14TH

Apraxia Awareness Day promotes awareness about Childhood Apraxia of Speech

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 1, 2013) – On May 14, 2013, the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) invites communities worldwide to become aware and educated about the needs, challenges, and abilities of children affected by apraxia.  Apraxia is among the most severe speech and communication problems in children.   Affected children have difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and palate that are necessary to produce clear, intelligible speech.

“Families have truly longed to have a day recognizing the struggles faced by their children.  There are many misconceptions about children who speak little or do not speak well.  We aim to improve the public awareness so that accurate information is shared and understood,” says Sharon Gretz, Executive Director of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA). A statement acknowledging Apraxia Awareness Day was placed in the Congressional record of the United States House of Representatives by U.S. Congressman Mike Doyle on April 30 and proclamations and resolutions are being issued by state level legislative bodies.

CASANA will be using social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and blogs to mobilize families, friends, and professionals to help educate and raise apraxia awareness.  An online Apraxia Awareness Day store has been set up to purchase t-shirts, buttons, and other awareness items.  The first Apraxia Awareness Day will include an online apraxia quiz, Twitter chat, contests, and a question and answer webinar.

Diagnosing The Wrong Deficit
For some people — especially children — sleep deprivation does not necessarily cause lethargy; instead they become hyperactive and unfocused. Researchers and reporters are increasingly seeing connections between dysfunctional sleep and what looks like A.D.H.D., but those links are taking a long time to be understood by parents and doctors. 2013 Arizona Apraxia Walk Butterfly Release
On April 27, 2013 Arizona held its first official Walk for Children with Apraxia at the Desert Breeze Park in Chandler.  The event was a huge success with over 250 participants.  However, one very unique happening was a live butterfly release.  Lynn, Carahaly, one of the walk coordinators for the event, had the idea. She especially wanted each child with apraxia to have a butterfly to release and to also honor Josephine Gay, one of the young children who died at their elementary school in Newtown, CT and who had apraxia.  Watch this video of the butterfly release honoring “Joey” and, indeed, the soaring spirit of all children with apraxia.  Watch the butterfly release
