CASANA Accepting Applications for 2014 Intensive Training Institute on Apraxia

CASANA Workshop Logo

(PITTSBURGH, PA) OCTOBER 28, 2013 – The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) is accepting applications for its 2014 Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) Intensive Training Institute to be held July 30, 2014 – August 3, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at Duquesne University’s Department of Speech-Language Pathology.  This intensive training experience is intended to provide North American-based speech-language pathologists, who already have significant experience with CAS, an opportunity to become “master” clinicians who can serve as local/regional experts and potential mentors for other clinicians.

“We are so excited to be able to offer this intensive training experience again this year for qualified SLP’s who have significant experience in the field of Childhood Apraxia of Speech and are ready to take those the next steps. While the selection process is rigorous, graduates of this program have been able to serve as regional experts for families seeking local professionals to evaluate and treat their children with CAS and mentors for other clinicians interested in CAS,” says Kathy Hennessy, CASANA’s Director of Education.

The ideal candidate for the intensive training – often called “Apraxia Bootcamp” – has:

  • provided treatment to numerous children with this diagnosis,
  • feels reasonably successful with them,
  • routinely attends training to improve their skills with this population, and
  •  is committed to developing high level clinical thinking skills for use in diagnosis and treatment with children who have CAS

CASANA initiated the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Intensive Training Institute in 2011 as an effort to expand high-level, advanced clinical expertise throughout the United States and Canada for the population of children affected by CAS, a population that is noted for being complex to both diagnose and treat.  A highly competitive program, the Institute accepts only 20 candidates in the program.

Accepted applicants pay for room, board, travel, and materials, while CASANA provides over 30 hours of specialized, advanced training with three CAS Expert faculty members and ongoing professional mentoring.  Funding for the specialized training and mentoring is made possible by donors and supporters of the Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech® as well as in-kind support from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Duquesne University.

Interested professionals should download the application and mail the completed application, postmarked no later than December 20, 2013, to CASANA.  For questions, contact Kathy Hennessy via email only at kathyh@apraxia-kids.org.

Tell Me About Apraxia – “Don’t worry, she’ll catch up.” I heard that sentence from so many parents around Anna’s second birthday. We were worried about her speech; she was talking all the time but we could barely understand her while kids her age and younger spoke clearly. “Don’t worry she’ll catch up,” people would say. I said the same thing to myself. I figured it would just happen. Fatherhood, Etc. Blog, 9/17/2013
