Tell Me About Apraxia – “Don’t worry, she’ll catch up.” I heard that sentence from so many parents around Anna’s second birthday. We were worried about her speech; she was talking all the time but we could barely understand her while kids her age and younger spoke clearly. “Don’t worry she’ll catch up,” people would say. I said the same thing to myself. I figured it would just happen. Fatherhood, Etc. Blog, 9/17/2013

Learning Disabilities Affect Up to 10 Percent of Children, Study Finds
A new study by academics at UCL and Goldsmiths indicates that up to 10 percent of the population are affected by specific learning disabilities (SLDs), and that children are frequently affected by more than one learning disability such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and specific language impairment. As a part of the study, researchers summarized what is currently known about SLD’s neural and genetic basis to help clarify what is causing these disabilities to develop, helping to improve teaching for individual learners, and also training for school pyschologists, clinicians, and teachers.  Medical Express – Psychology & Psychiatry – April 18, 2013

2013 National Conference Speaker/Session Spotlight: Tricia McCabe, Ph.D.

2013 National Conference Speaker/ Session Spotlight

Thursday, July 11 – Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center

Tricia McCabe, Ph.D., is Course Director and Senior Lecturer at The University of Sydney. Her main research area is treatment for moderate-severe speech impairments in children. Within this area she has a number of interests including (a) treatments for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) (also known as dyspraxia), (b) disorders of speech which cause impairments to production of polysyllabic words and longer linguistic units, (c) the comparison of phonological and articulation treatments to demonstrate relative effectiveness and efficiency and (d) the use of ultrasound for biofeedback in speech pathology. With her colleagues, Elizabeth Murray and Kirrie Ballard, she has recently completed a Randomised Control Trial comparing ReST with the Nuffield Dyspraxia Program (3rd ed). Other research projects in CAS currently underway include: Developing parent delivered interventions for children with CAS in both Australia and Canada; projects trialing computer delivered versions of ReST and NDP3; and a longitudinal study of speech development in children with early identified ASD. She is Chair of the International CAS Assessment Consortium. This Consortium hopes to develop agreed reporting standards to be used in research involving children with CAS. Tricia is particularly interested in the application of the principles of speech motor learning to new treatments for CAS particularly and articulation and voice disorders more generally. She is also interested in the application of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in speech pathology and speech pathology service delivery innovations.

You are traveling a very long way to speak at the 2013 National Conference on CAS. What are you looking forward to the most?
“I’m excited to meet a wide range of people who are all interested in CAS and very excited to share our new treatment and our research results. It’s very exciting to have done the first ever randomized control trial of treatments for children with CAS and I want as many people as possible to know about it.”

What makes our National Conference on CAS so different from other conferences?
“The variety of people: parents, children, clinicians and researchers all together.”

ReST: A New Treatment for Prosody and Speech Accuracy for School-Aged Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Rapid Syllable Transition Training (ReST) is a recently developed treatment for improving prosody and speech accuracy in children aged 4-12. ReST uses pseudo-words of 2-3 syllables to target syllable segregation, lexical stress and articulatory consistency and accuracy in high intensity drill based therapy. We have recently completed a randomized control trial of ReST which shows that the treatment is effective and generalizes to untreated words. In our recent research, we also showed that children who had treatment 4 days per week for 3 weeks continued to improve for up to 4 months after the treatment stopped. This workshop will describe the background to the treatment, the research including the RCT and other studies including parent training and a trial of computer delivery, and describe who the treatment might suit. Participants will watch the therapy being conducted and will learn to judge correct and incorrect target productions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to describe the theoretical background of the Rapid Syllable Transition Training (ReST).
  • Participants will be able to describe the major components of the treatment.
  • Participants will be able to identify correct and incorrect production of the treatment stimuli.

The information presented in your session might be fairly new information for many of the participants.  Why do you feel it’s important to have this additional tool available in the treatment of children with CAS?
“Having treatment that has been shown to be effective at improving speech and prosodic accuracy in children aged 4-12 is a huge leap forward. Until now the best research evidence we have had has been group studies where the children were not randomized and follow-up data was not collected. Our new treatment, ReST, shows excellent results.”

Albuquerque, New Mexico Boy, 4, Left on Bus for More Than an Hour
An Albuquerque mother lived a nightmare when her 4-year-old son, Josiah Ortiz, went missing after he didn’t make a speech therapy class.  With no one at the school to come out and get Josiah, the bus driver left with him still on the bus and continued her route because she did not want to leave him unattended. KOAT Albuquerque – The Northerner Blog – April 12, 2013, By Anna Velasquez

Farmington, Minnesota 3-year-old left alone on school bus for 4 hours
Elliott Johnson, a 3-year-old boy with childhood apraxia of speech, doesn’t say a lot. His mother, Elizabeth Johnson said, “He doesn’t speak well and he’s very shy.” On Friday, April 12, 2013 he never made it to school, even with the bus driver and bus aide on board. CASANA Named as Beneficiary of Oana Hogrefe Photography’s Childhood Calendar Fundraiser

childhood_calendar_logo(PITTSBURGH, PA)—(April 12, 2013) –The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) has been selected as the beneficiary of the 2014 Childhood Calendar fundraiser  from Oana Hogrefe Photography to support important funding for apraxia programs and research as well as raise awareness of childhood apraxia of speech.

Oana Hogrefe Photography, a boutique studio specializing in memorable portraits of babies, children, and families and  located in Atlanta, GA, started the Children’s Calendar project as a yearly fundraiser benefitting charities dedicated to bettering the lives of children and families.  Ms. Hogrefe has issued a public casting call in which 25-30 children, mostly in the Atlanta area, will be selected to be photographed as a part of this effort.  All funds collected through the session fee, the online voting for the calendar’s featured month images, and the sales of the calendars will be donated to CASANA.  Since its inception, the Childhood Calendar has raised over $20,000 and is now in its fourth year.

“CASANA is so very pleased to partner with Oana Hogrefe on the 2014 Children’s Calendar project,” said Sharon Gretz, M.Ed., Executive Director and Founder of CASANA.  “Not only will the project raise important funding for our programs and research, but it also will raise awareness about childhood apraxia of speech and the need for all of us to raise our voices so that children affected by apraxia receive the support, attention, and recognition that they both need and deserve.”

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a very challenging and complicated speech disorder in children, making it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables and/or words despite having a good understanding of language.  .  With appropriate help and support, children with apraxia can make great strides in their quest to become verbal communicators.

“It is a joy to involve the community each year through the various stages of the Childhood Calendar project.  Parents and children alike delight in being able to help fund both well-known as well as smaller non-profits, while creating beautiful images at the same time,” said Oana Hogrefe, owner of Oana Hogrefe Photography and creator of the Childhood Calendar. “CASANA’s mission moves me deeply, as I strongly believe each one of us has a right and a universal need for self-expression.  Helping children speak clearly and correctly is a worthy cause, and we are honored to play a part in furthering this effort.”

To support or learn more about the Children’s Calendar Project and to participate in the casting call, please visit http://www.childrenscalendar.com.  To visit Oana Hogrefe Photography’s website, visit http://www.shutterview.com.

The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA), founded in 2000, strives to improve the systems of support in the lives of children with apraxia so that each child is afforded their best opportunity to develop speech and to achieve to their potential. CASANA works toward this mission through promoting national awareness of childhood apraxia of speech; providing high quality information and support to families and professionals; conducting multiple educational events around the nation; and supporting as well as funding apraxia research.  For more information on CASANA and Childhood Apraxia of Speech, visit the Apraxia-KIDS website at http://www.apraxia-kids.org.
