Treatment involves careful target selection based on the child's current repertoire of sounds and syllable shapes as well as stimulable sounds/shapes. I employ multimodal cues, including visual, verbal, tactile-kinesthetic methods, depending on what can be most easily faded and that best benefits the child. I begin with massed and blocked practice with knowledge of performance feedback and shaping, and transition as quickly as possible to randomized practice with knowledge of results feedback, working with parents to encourage appropriate home practice for generalization as welll as to select the most relevant/motivating targets. I recommend frequent sessions and collaborate with school/other clinicians to synchronize the treatment.
I follow Apraxia Kids online and am up to date with training opportunities and new research to inform my practice. I endeavor to attend and contribute to Apraxia Kids National Conference ever since first attending in 2014. I am an aspiring Apraxia bootcamp applicant and am working toward training team members at my new full time clinical setting in best evaluation and treatment practices for CAS.
Parents observe directly at least 50 percent of the time with regular phone, direct, or email check in.
I have as yet minimal experience in this area but am encouraging 2 families I currently work with to pusrue this type of evaluation. I am very open to simultaneous treatment with motor learning principles while emphasizing total communication using a device.
