Describe treatment approach used: Treatment sessions are set up to be systematic & allow for multiple repetitions of the same phoneme, syllable shape, word or phrase, as appropriate for the client being treated. A large number of trials each session, is the goal, as that is always better for motor learning. If at all possible, I schedule my clients for multiple sessions per week, ideally 3-4 times a week. While this is not always possible, due to scheduling or funding available for treatment, the distributed practice of sessions is ideal for therapy. If the child is not able to come into the clinic multiple times a week, a more robust home program is created to give families the ability to practice speech sounds, syllable shapes, and words in a child's natural environment.

In treatment sessions, I set up blocks of practice specific to a client's needs and randomize the sounds, syllables, or words within that block. For example, if a client is working on bilabial sounds at the beginning of a syllable, therapy would focus on consonant-vowel productions including bilabial sounds. Therapy sessions are structured to allow for mass and distributed practice, as well as block & random trials to assist in motor learning. Initially, treatment does focus on increasing a child's confidence for getting sounds "right" through block practice & having them feel successful.

Included in teaching is a slow, speech model, to assist in motor learning and accuracy by allowing the client time to hear & see the sound production. By being able to attend to sensory motor feedback, they are better able to learn the sounds or syllable shapes.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents/Caregivers are involved from the start. In addition to home programming, I educate families on speech sound aspects for place, manner, and voicing. I provide hand outs and provide specific teach of hand cues/gestures that can be done when sounds are produced. We talk from the beginning about keeping syllables together, not separating by sound. I work with families on being face-to-face with their child so they receive as much information as possible about sound production (i.e. being able to see how their parent's mouth moves).
