About the Workshop:
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders or developmental delay can be vocal, yet non-verbal. They may produce sounds and syllables, but do not use words to communicate. Some of these children may have speech sound disorders, or a motor component to their speech difficulty, including Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Though it is difficult to judge whether or not these children truly exhibit apraxia of speech, a specialized approach of shaping successive word approximations, combined with shaping sign language, has been shown to help non-verbal children become verbal communicators. New research data and video clips of these techniques will be shared and explored.
In this course, the presenters will demonstrate techniques of shaping sign language for requesting, and employing successive approximations for echoics (verbal imitation utilizing the Kaufman techniques) toward functional target vocabulary. Methods to improve production of specific words corresponding to individual needs and desires of the child will also be presented. In addition, strategies to improve cooperation, minimize “problem behavior” which may interfere with learning, and develop the subskills necessary to utilize these procedures will be shared.

A recipient of the Clinical Service Award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the KCC continues to grow and has earned a reputation for excellence, warmth, and successful outcomes. Nancy has three grown children and resides with her husband in West Bloomfield, Michigan.
Tamara S. Kasper, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCBA, is a Speech-Language Pathologist with 20 years of experience working with children with challenging behaviors. Tamara’s commitment to the children she serves led her to pursue treatment methods outside the field of Speech-Language Pathology. She has devoted her career to identifying, developing, and promoting effective treatment strategies for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Under the mentorship of Dr. Vincent Carbone, Tamara received advanced training in the application of Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior (AVB) to the treatment of children with autism and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2006. Tamara is a frequently invited international lecturer, having treated clients and trained professionals in England, Ireland, Greece, Bermuda and other countries. Her diverse background in multiple treatment formats allow her to provide intervention techniques that are successful in building functional verbal behavior for children on the autism spectrum. Tamara is the director of The Center for Autism Treatment located near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a center which provides individualized ABA intervention plans for children and consulting services and workshops to autism treatment teams in the United States and abroad. Tamara’s publications include the K&K Sign to Talk Materials, and Speak with Sign.
