What is the purpose of the Apraxia-Kids listserv?
The purpose of the Apraxia-Kids listserv is to provide an electronic forum for information sharing related to apraxia, its assessment, treatment and the language, learning, social and educational ramifications to the children. In addition to providing information to families, professionals, students, and researchers, the list provides emotional support to those affected by childhood apraxia of speech. The listserv management strives to insure that the listserv stays true to this topic.

I tried to subscribe (or unsubscribe) and it didn’t work. Why?
Most often this is due to typing inaccurately and imprecisely. When you are sending these commands you are communicating with software, not with a person. Thus, the commands must be spelled exact and typed precise. As an example, if you leave out the hyphen in Apraxia-Kids, the software will not know what list you are trying to subscribe or unsubscribe from. If you type SIGNOFF as two words, instead of one, the software does not recognize the command. If you type the command in the subject line, instead of the main portion of the email note, the software will not recognize what you are doing. Thus, the best thing is to be sure you are spelling correctly and typing exact. If you still have difficulty, FORWARD the rejection notice to sharong@apraxia-kids.org
I am getting too many emails in my inbox, is there another way to receive Apraxia-Kids Listserv? (Digest)
The Digest is a once daily compilation of all the email notes sent by Apraxia-Kids subscribers for that particular day. It arrives in your email inbox as one long email instead of individual emails. You still get everything, but the notes are compiled, one right under the next, in a single large email unit. To subscribe to DIGEST you must first be subscribed to Apraxia-Kids Listserv. After you have subscribed you will send the command below to change your setting to DIGEST:
Address a note to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU
Subject line is blank
The actual message area should read: SET APRAXIA-KIDS DIGEST
Click on "SEND"
(remember, you have to follow the subscribe directions first, before you can send the DIGEST command)

I have a new email address and I want my Apraxia-Kids list email to go to my new address. How do I do it?
First, you must use the commands for UNSUBSCRIBING while you are in your OLD email address.
Address an email note to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU
Leave the subject line blank
In the message portion type: SIGNOFF APRAXIA-KIDS
Click on "SEND"
Once you have unsubscribed, then go to your NEW email address and follow the directions for SUBSCRIBING

***It is imperative that you send the commands from the correct address, i.e. the address you were already subscribed under in order to unsubscribe the old address and the new address in order to subscribe it to Apraxia-kids. If you don’t send it from the correct address, your command will be rejected.

I sent a note, but it did not immediately appear through the list. Why?
Apraxia-Kids is a moderated listserv. All notes are first sent to our moderator. If the note is appropriate for Apraxia-Kids, follows our policies and guidelines, it is sent on to the entire listserv group. Because our moderator is a real person, she does not sit in front of her computer 24/7 in order to process the list mail. Thus, there may be a delay from the time you send the note to the time you see it coming back to you via the Apraxia-Kids Listserv address, indicating that it has been distributed to all members. Remember this when you have the need for information that depends on people responding to you by a certain date.
Why is the listserv moderated?
Apraxia-Kids Listserv has been in existence for 13 years. In that time, we have determined that a moderator is essential in order to:
- keep the list focused on its purpose
- provide quality information
- to guard privacy
- to ensure a supportive environment
- and to eliminate undesirable mail (spam) making it to our subscription email boxes
Many lists that are not moderated are filled with unrelated and off topic email, junk mail, and recycled notes that listmembers type on top of old list mail and send back through. On other lists, flaming and insults occur, creating an unsafe emotional environment for subscribers. We want our list to be different. We want it to be as streamlined as possible, with on topic, relative, and credible information. We want it to be as supportive as possible. We want our information to be presented in easy to read and useable forms. We have determined that the best way to do that is to have a moderator. Our moderator must, on occasion, make judgement calls related to posting material. The organization reserves the right to accept or reject postings to the listserv. We understand and respect that not all individuals want a moderated listserv. In these cases, subscribers are free to locate lists that better suit their needs.

Why might my note to the listserv be returned to me by the moderator or not appear on the list?
There are various reasons that your note might be returned to you to be fixed and/or reasons that your note might not appear at all. For instance, a subscriber may actually be sending their email to the wrong address. Be sure that your email is properly addressed!
Below are the most common reasons that our moderator may return a note to you:
Best Interest Determination - Apraxia-KIDS staff and administrators reserve the right to make a determination of rejecting a note in whole or part due to the best interest of Apraxia-KIDS and/or the organizations that support Apraxia-KIDS (CASANA and The Hendrix Foundation). Many factors may come into play including complex ethical, legal, and professional related issues. It is solely within the right of Apraxia-KIDS staff and administration to make a best interest determination.
Excessive Quoting: You have responded to someone else’s note by simply typing on top of it or below it and sending the entire thing back to us. This is called excessive quoting. To avoid having your note returned to you, use your cursor to highlight and then cut most of the other person’s note except for a few short lines that properly reference the comments that you intend to make. Once you’ve removed most of their comments, then type your own note in the message unit. As a new subscriber or poster to Apraxia-Kids, our moderator will patiently return the notes to you and ask that you eliminate the excessive quoting. However, if you continue after a period of time to send notes with excessive quoting and fail to respond to the moderator’s requests that you follow this guideline, your notes with excessive quoting will simply be deleted by our moderator.
Failure to remove the "footer" from previous note which you are responding to. At the bottom of every note that passes through the Apraxia-Kids Listserv, you will see a portion at the bottom, called the "footer". In the footer it states who the listserv is sponsored and produced by and gives copyright information. If you are responding to someone else’s note, this "footer" is the part of the text which you need to remove prior to typing your new comments and sending to the listserv. Use your cursor to first highlight and then cut the footer from your reply.
"Cross posting". Cross posting means that you have addressed your note to two or more addresses. Please look at the "To:" line of your email note. Your note will be returned to you or edited by the moderator before posting if you included more addresses than our Apraxia-Kids email address. Cross posting to multiple individuals or lists causes confusion because inevitably a recipient will use the "reply to all" feature. Thus, we do not permit cross posting to other addresses in the same note that you are sending to Apraxia-Kids. To avoid mail being returned for this reason, only type the APRAXIA-KIDS@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU address in the "To:" line.
Advertisements and Promotions. Apraxia-Kids does not permit advertisements, solicitations, promotions of products, services, companies or organizations. In the sharing of information, subscribers do share helpful tips, products that helped their child, etc. This is fine. However, it is the sole right of our moderator and other administrators of Apraxia-KIDS to determine when an email crosses the line from being informational to being a solicitation or promotion. A note that is determined to be of this nature, will be deleted. If you have any doubts about your note, please contact the moderator to discuss.
Replying to a private email through the list. Individuals on the listserv have the choice to respond to the entire Apraxia-Kids listserv or reply to the individual poster of a list note. If someone replies just to a subscriber, not the listserv, it is a private note. We will not permit replies to private notes via the listserv. Thus, if someone has written to you privately, you need to reply to them privately.
Did not include a subject in your subject line - we ask that all notes include an appropriate subject description in the subject line. This will help subscribers get helpful responses to notes. It will avoid people deleting your note as they go through their email.
Sent an "off-topic" note unrelated to CAS - if you send an occassional off topic note, please mark the subject with "OT" so that others who prefer not to read off topic notes, can delete it. However, at the sole discretion of Apraxia-KIDS staff, off topic notes may be deleted or sent to the author for editing or revision. This is especially true when a topic has been exhaustively discussed and has veered off topic.
Forwarded mail without permission from the author - we generally will not post email from a third party that a subscriber is forwarding. Please get permission from the authors of email prior to forwarding to the Apraxia-Kids listserv
Why should I ask permission before I forward a note from Apraxia-Kids to other people?
Email written by others belongs to them and is copyrighted. Do not forward email written by other subscribers without the individual writer’s explicit permission. Especially do not forward their writing to other listservs or post on a website without the author’s permission. Aside from the legalities, it is common courtesy.
