2nd BALTIMORE AREA WALK FOR APRAXIA!
Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a neurologically based motor-speech disorder. Apraxia causes children to have difficulty making sounds, syllables, and words. The brain knows what the child wants to say, but there is a problem getting the signals needed to move the child’s lips, jaw, and tongue in order to produce speech. Children with apraxia of speech require frequent and intensive speech therapy designed to improve the planning, sequencing, and coordination of movements for speech.
FROM THE WALK COORDINATORS: OUR INSPIRATION...
"My precious little guy, Cole, was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech when he was about 18months old. When we found out, I decided that I was going to do whatever I could to educate myself and advocate for my child. I started with internet research and finally came across an amazing organization called CASANA (Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association- North America). After seeing doctors and therapists, I attended a conference last summer being held by CASANA. It was so priceless to my family!
In September 2009, Cole started a ‘typical’ preschool having less than 10 intelligible words in his vocabulary. I am ecstatic to say that less than a year later he is saying 5-7 word sentences! Everything from ‘I love you so much, Momma’ to ‘No orange juice, I want apple juice’. It is awesome. And I know it is due to his hard work and the hard work of all the people around him!
CASANA helped me learn what treatments existed for Cole and the best way to advocate for him. The conference I attended empowered me with networking tools and resources to help make educated, well rounded choices for Cole." ~ from Sarah (Cole's mom)
"Avery is a bright, sweet, loving 3 year old boy. Avery loves all the typical boy things. He loves to wrestle, rough house, climb, dig, and play with trucks. Like a typical child Avery loves all things Curious George and trains. What sets Avery apart from the typical child you would never know unless you tried speaking to him.
At 3 years old Avery has the expressive language of a 1 1/2 year old. Avery receives private speech therapy and will require intensive private speech therapy for quite some time. Avery talks up a storm, but a perfect stranger can only understand 10-20% of any of the words he says. Avery has Apraxia of Speech.
Think how wonderful it is to hear the first time your child's gentle little voice says 'I love you'. My son Avery has yet to say those three sweet words but with the help of CASANA (Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America) and many others he is on his way to learning how. Please help us raise awareness!" ~ from Heather (Avery's mom)
We are thankful to CASANA for so much! This year with the 2010 Walk, we hope to help raise money so that CASANA can help educate other families like ours. The proceeds for this Walk will benefit CASANA research projects, education projects and informative conferences. It will help to reach other families and also help inform ours. Please sign up to walk as an individual, start a team or join an existing team!
Register to walk by August 27, 2010 to receive your Apraxia Walk T-Shirt!
