Unlock our Voice, Open our Future
Last year, our son, Sean, a 7 year old with apraxia of speech, saw a banner for a charity walk as we drove through a local park. After I explained what it was, Sean said, “Let’s do a walk for apraxia!” When Sean was first diagnosed with apraxia at age two, he was so severe that we were told he may never be able to communicate verbally. To realize that I could understand everything that he was saying to me from the backseat of my car brought tears to my eyes and resolve to my heart. We would do that walk for apraxia!
Without CASANA’s help and support over the years, Sean and so many other children would not have found their voices. Our first Walk for Apraxia was held in October 2008. Sean was so excited to see that 350 adults and children came out to join him to walk in support of children with apraxia of speech. He was able to meet other local children with apraxia and walk with them. He even read a book aloud to the crowd!!
Sean and our family know how hard it can be for children with apraxia to find their voices. Let’s make this 2009 walk even bigger this year to help more children with apraxia of speech! All proceeds benefit CASANA’s Apraxia Programs and Research.
One step at a time, we can move forward together to help our children find their voices!
The Apraxia Walk is a 1.5 mile loop through the park, appropriate for children, adults and families.
