From the Walk Coordinator:
"Do you know the feeling you get when you know something is wrong? That is what happened to me. I knew something was wrong when my little girl, TyAnn, did not make a sound as a baby and when she was old enough to talk, she did not. As more fear set in, I decided to call our district for help. TyAnn was tested and it was determined she was able to hear just fine, however, there was nothing coming out of her mouth. So TyAnn’s speech therapist insisted on trying one more test. That same day is when TyAnn was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech.
As a mother, it hurt me when I was told that TyAnn had a “disorder.” All I could think of was, “What did I do wrong? How could this happen to her? How could this happen to us?”
I was told that my daughter would need speech therapy but it was possible that it may not help her talk. I thought, “Oh my gosh! I have this beautiful, little angel that I love deeply and I will never hear her say, ‘I love you.’”
This is what hurts the deepest but I refuse to show TyAnn because I have to be strong for her. I have to motivate her to work hard and to keep moving forward. My goal in life is to raise awareness of apraxia in Utah so when people talk to TyAnn or another child with apraxia of speech, a long explanation is not needed. Please help us raise awareness and funds to benefit CASANA, the national organization benefitting children and families affected by Apraxia.
Please join us to Walk and "Stomp for Apraxia!" This is our 2nd Annual Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech!
