Thank you for supporting Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA). Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Apraxia awareness is very important to us. If more people, especially within the medical field, were aware of it, Jon may have received treatment for it earlier. He was six before anyone considered this as a reason for why he was not able to speak clearly. Jon's previous therapist thought he may be apraxic but wasn't able to diagnose it. She did take the time to learn about it and look for methods to help him. Jon's newest therapist also had to look into ways to treat apraxia, but she was able to diagnose him. Numerous doctors and specialists tried to determine why Jon had such severe speech problems, but apparently apraxia is so rare that until Jon's newest therapist made the diagnosis, it was never considered. One thing that many of them said was that if he showed signs of autism, they would have picked up on the apraxia earlier. Jon shows no signs of autism, which every doctor agrees with. Some similarities, but he is not autistic.
Help us raise awareness of apraxia so that other children do not face the difficulties that Jon has.
