Identifying speech disorders in young children can be challenging, especially when speech disorders co-exist. This practical “clinical grand rounds” webinar will explore the case of a child in which both a phonological disorder and childhood apraxia of speech were identified. We will analyze his speech output at initial diagnosis and discuss how to determine the relative contribution of each of his underlying speech disorders to his overall communication disability so that treatment methods and initial treatment targets can be decided upon. At the end of this Webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will be able to explain a way to identify co-existing phonological/apraxia speech disorders.
  • Participants will be able to explain how to determine the relative contribution of co-existing speech disorders to the child’s overall communication disorder.
  • Participants will be able to discuss strategies for determining initial treatment targets and treatment methods for a child with a mixed phonological/apraxia speech disorder.

Regular Registration: $35.00 per person (1.5 hours of instruction from 1 session; no CEU’s)

Professional Registration: $50.00 per person (1.5 hours of instruction from 1 session; ASHA CEU’s)

This course is offered for .15 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area)

Sue Caspari, M.A., CCC-SLP

ue Caspari, M.A., CCC/SLP, is a speech-language pathologist working in private practice in the Philadelphia area. Over the years, she has worked with children and adults with neurogenic speech and language disorders in early intervention, educational, and hospital settings, including the Mayo Clinic. In her current practice, she works primarily with, and as a consultant and advocate for, children with severe speech production disorders. She has advanced knowledge and experience in the areas of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and alternative and augmentative communication. Sue has published scholarly articles on CAS, conducts workshops on CAS, and speaks on CAS at national conferences such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) annual meeting. Sue is a professional advisory board member of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA), an associate member of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences, and a member of ASHA’s Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders Special Interest Division; is licensed in the state of Pennsylvania; and holds a Pennsylvania teaching certificate for the speech and hearing impaired.
